The Cemetery was established in the 15th century when the Jewish people were not permitted to be buried anywhere other than in their own designated graveyard.
The small space had to accomodate the burial plots of the entire Jewish community from 1439 until 1787.
It is thought that there could be around 12,000 graves, with plots at least 12 layers deep.
